EC officially declares NDC’s Faustina Akurugu as MP-elect for Dome Kwabenya
The Electoral Commission (EC) has officially announced Faustina Akurugu Elikplim, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate, as the duly elected Member of Parliament (MP) for Dome Kwabenya.
This declaration comes after prolonged disputes between the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the NDC over the constituency’s election results.
In an emergency meeting of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC), on Tuesday, December 31, the EC Chairperson, Jean Mensa, confirmed the decision, stating that the electoral process in the Dome Kwabenya Constituency had reached its conclusion.
“Today, we are pleased to announce that the proceedings and collation at the Dome Kwabenya Constituency have come to a close.
It has gone full circle, and we are convinced beyond any shadow of a doubt that the outcome reflects the will of the people as expressed at the polls.
“Ours is not to make anybody president or MP.
Ours is to ensure that our outcome and processes guarantee that the people’s choice is upheld,” she affirmed.
Following the re-collation, Faustina Akurugu Elikplim secured 50,967 votes, while the NPP’s Mike Oquaye Junior garnered 50,669 votes.
This declaration puts an end to the heated contestation over the seat and solidifies the NDC’s position in the constituency as Faustina Akurugu Elikplim prepares to assume her role as MP.
The decision by the EC also means the planned re-run at the outstanding polling station in the constituency has been cancelled.
