Ban all legal and illegal mining that are destroying our lands – #FreeTheCitizens tells gov’t
Protesters organizing a three-day rally under the hashtags #FreeTheCitizens and #StopGalamseyNow have asked that the government, specifically the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, immediately halt all mining activity in the country.
Speaking on Friday, October 4, during the protest’s second day, the principal organizer highlighted that the serious threat that galamsey posed to Ghanaians’ lives, particularly the lives of the youth, was the motivating factor behind their action.
“As we stated yesterday, we are here today, and our purpose is to demand that they cease all dangerous, illegal, and legal activities that endanger our water and land,” the speaker declared.
Furthermore, the organization expressed its dissatisfaction with a recent announcement by the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) regarding decreasing water turbidity levels in the Central Region.
They criticized the GWCL’s statement as “shared politics,” stating that it misses the more serious issue of the government’s commitment to combating galamsey.
“We are going to say today that the Ministry of Land and Land Resources put a ban on all legal and illegal activities that are destroying our lands,” he stated.
