13 candidates cleared , 11 disqualified for the 2024 presidential elections.

The Electoral Commission (EC) has formally cleared 13 presidential candidates to run in the upcoming 2024 general elections, while dismissing 11 others who filed candidacy.

Following a comprehensive screening process, the EC confirmed in a statement today that 13 candidates satisfied the legal and constitutional prerequisites to contest for the presidency in the elections scheduled for December 7.

11 candidates, however, were disqualified by the panel for a number of reasons, including problems with the legitimacy of their submissions, insufficient evidence, and failing to meet eligibility requirements.

The EC explained that the disqualified aspirants were given ample time to rectify discrepancies in their documents, but they were unable to do so within the stipulated time-frame.

Some were found to have submitted false information, while others failed to garner the required number of endorsements from registered voters in different regions, as mandated by electoral regulations.

EC Chairperson, Jean Mensa, emphasized the commission’s commitment to ensuring a transparent and fair electoral process. “

The vetting process was rigorous and thorough to guarantee that all candidates comply with the requirements set out in the 1992 Constitution and the electoral laws of Ghana.

Our goal is to ensure that only qualified candidates are on the ballot,” she remarked.

The 13 cleared candidates include representatives from major political parties such as the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and a number of smaller parties. Independent candidates are also among those permitted to run.

The EC encouraged the disqualified aspirants to respect the judgment and assured the public that the process was fair and objective.

The commission also urged all political parties and candidates to follow the electoral guidelines to ensure a calm election season.

The December 7, 2024 elections are expected to be hotly contested, as the country prepares for what is expected to be a critical democratic exercise.
