GBA Elections: Efua Ghartey elected as first female President
Legal Practitioner Efua Ghartey has been elected as the Ghana Bar Association’s first female President.
This happened during the GBA election at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology’s (KNUST) Great Hall.
Efua Gartey received 1,208 votes, followed by Kwadzo Dzakpasu with 1,060.
Her last two bids to lead the Association resulted in tight losses to Tony Forson, the GBA’s immediate past president, and Yaw Boafo, the current national president, by 67 and 65 votes, respectively.
Efua Ghartey, the immediate past chair of the Greater Accra branch of the GBA, has over 20 years of experience in the bar.
Her triumph is a remarkable accomplishment for the GBA, which has been governed by male presidents since its establishment.
In her acceptance speech, the GBA President-elect pledged to defend the legal profession and expressed her joy at becoming the Association’s first female President.
“I am humbled and honored to be the first female President of the Ghana Bar Association; this is a first for the bar to entrust leadership to women.
As President of the Ghana Bar Association, Efua Ghartey has committed to lead the organization’s efforts to promote the rule of law, preserve attorneys’ rights, and advance the interests of Ghana’s legal profession.
Her inauguration is set to take place on Monday, November 4, 2024.
In a statement, departing GBA President Yaw Boafo stated that the GBA is “proud to have Efua Ghartey as its first female President” and looks forward to collaborating with her to achieve the set goals and objectives.
