Election: We’re not the first EC to re-collate results – Bossman Asare

The Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) in charge of Corporate Affairs, Dr. Bossman Asare, has defended the EC’s decision to re-collate some parliamentary election results.

This comes amid growing criticisms about the nature of the Commission’s handling of fallout from the just-ended polls.

Speaking at a press conference on December 24, 2024, Dr. Asare stated that the practice of re-collating votes is not unprecedented, citing several instances under previous EC administrations.

“The commission is trying to make a point that what is being done now is not new. There are a lot of historical antecedents,” he remarked, addressing concerns about the legitimacy of the re-collation process.

To support his argument, Dr. Asare highlighted historical examples, including the re-collation of results in the Tolon constituency in Tamale (2004), Yapei Kusawgu (2004), and the Pru constituency (2004), among others.

The EC dismissed accusations of illegality, stressing that re-collation is a legitimate step to ensure the accuracy and integrity of election results.

He however urged that the MP-elects for Ablekuma North and Dome-Kwabenya will be declared before January 7 inauguration.
